What to Expect
First Year (Graduate Students)
- Lab rotations (if applicable) or immediate project start
- Coursework in your degree program
- Weekly one-on-one meetings with Dr. Zhang
- Lab meetings participation
- Development of Individual Development Plan (IDP)
Onboarding
All new members receive:
- Lab safety and computational resource orientation
- Introduction to lab protocols and expectations
- Assignment of a lab buddy (experienced member for questions)
- Access to shared resources, code repositories, and documentation

We believe in sustainable productivity. The lab has flexible hours, and we do not expect weekend or evening work except near deadlines. Mental health and personal well-being come first.
About Mississippi State
Mississippi State University is a land-grant research university located in Starkville, Mississippi. With strong programs in agriculture, engineering, and the sciences, MSU offers excellent resources for graduate training.
Starkville is a friendly college town with affordable cost of living, mild winters, and a welcoming community. The campus is about 2 hours from Jackson, 3 hours from Memphis, and 2 hours from Birmingham.

Q: Do I need programming experience to join the lab?
A: Not necessarily! For graduate students, we can teach you what you need. However, demonstrating willingness to learn (e.g., taking a free online course) strengthens your application.
Q: Is the GRE required?
A: No. MSU does not require the GRE for most graduate programs.
Q: Can international students apply?
A: Yes! We welcome international applicants. MSU’s Office of International Services can assist with visa requirements.
Q: What if I’m interested but not sure about a specific project?
A: That’s fine! Email Dr. Zhang to discuss your interests and we can identify good fits.

Step 2: Discussion
If there’s a potential fit, we’ll schedule a video call to discuss your background, interests, and goals.
Step 3: Formal Application
For graduate positions, submit formal application through MSU Graduate School. For postdocs, provide full application materials.
Step 4: Interview
Invited candidates will interview (virtual or in-person) with Dr. Zhang and lab members.
